For the first Soccer World Cup event, Uruguay 1930, Brazil placed sixth in the classification while Uruguay, the hosts, were the World Champions. For this World Cup there was no qualifying rounds. FIFA invited the countries to participate but few countries accepted the invitation. Just four (4) countries from Europe and nine (9) from Americas participated. From Europe came France, Belgium, Romania and Yugoslavia. From Americas came Brazil, Argentina, Peru, Paraguay, Chile, Bolivia, United States of America and Mexico.

The Brazilians first match in a World Cup happened in the 14th of June 1930, against Yugoslavia. The game was played in the "Parque Central" stadium at Montevideo. Brazil lost 2-1 to Yugoslavia. At the end of first half, score was 2-0 to Yugoslavia, but in the second half Brazil reduced with a goal from "Preguinho" at the 17th minute. João Coelho Neto aka "Preguinho" entered the history of Brazilian soccer by scoring the first ever goal of the "selecção" in a World Cup.

The next game would be against Bolivia, which Brazil won an expressive result of 4-0! This would be their first ever victory in a World Cup. The goals were scored by Moderato (37' and 73') and "Preguinho" (57' and 83').
